A study done by the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that 47% of Americans make self-improvement or education related New Year’s resolutions. They also discovered that people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. What resolutions did you make for 2014?
Think about your own training and development. Create a series of planned learning experiences to you help make positive changes in the way you work and make decisions. You will achieve your resolutions; you just need to be disciplined and commit to taking action!
Start with the end in mind. Where do you want to be in 3, 6, 9, 12 months? What will make it happen? Envision the necessary changes you must make, work out what you need to do to get there, and start a strategic journey to make it happen.
Create a routine. Make sure that each day provides a learning opportunity. Whether it is reading up on industry developments or learning from on-the-ball colleagues; don’t just go through the motions this year. Grow and develop every day!
Be proactive with your learning. Attend all the possible training and professional development that is available. Identify the areas you wish to progress in and jump at any chance to receive professional development in that capacity.
Don’t just think of professional development as something that happens in the workplace. Take an interest outside of work. Visit the local chamber website, view their monthly calendar, and register for learning events.
Get involved. Don’t wait for things to happen, make them happen. See every day as an opportunity for you to learn and develop. Remember, just by making resolutions you are 10 times more likely to achieve your goal. Good luck!
